Abstract

Introduction: pregnancy in adolescence is a health problem. Objective: to analyze cardiovascular risk factors in pregnant adolescents treated at the José Luis Miranda Hospital from January 2014 to December 2015. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on pregnant adolescents. The sample (100) consisted of pregnant adolescent patients less than 18 years of age and with less than 20 weeks of pregnancy. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established, and a medical interview and a thorough physical examination were carried out. The anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were carried out by trained personnel and with the use of established tables. Complementary tests were indicated: blood count, blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, electrocardiogram, genetic ultrasound and fetal echocardiography. Results: pregnant normotensive adolescents predominated; pre-hypertensive and hypertensive adolescents were in the age group between 17 and 18 years; risk factors such as increased body mass index, toxic habits and family history of hypertension were related; anemia, dyslipidemias and electrocardiographic alterations (sinus tachycardia and extrasystolic arrhythmias) were detected; fetal cardiovascular and genitourinary abnormalities were diagnosed, as well as and low birth weight, congenital malformations and conatal sepsis were alterations found in newborns of pre-hypertensive or hypertensive adolescent mothers. Conclusions: pregnancy in adolescence associated with cardiovascular risk factors increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in the mother and the child. Advocacy and prevention actions should be improved for adolescents and new research should be conducted on the subject.
