Abstract

Human Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira, related to various epidemiological factors, where the prevention itself  is essential. A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted from February 2012 to January 2013, with the aim of characterize the risk patients of leptospirosis in the family doctor's office number 8 belonging to "José Ramón Acosta León" Polyclinic, municipality of Santa Clara. The study group was conformed by 298 patients and the sample was composed of 285, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. A documentary review of medical records and family health and  a questionnaire was applied in which was explored the knowledge about the subject. A database in SPSS was created and with the help of the package the information was processed. A predominance of male patients was found between the ages of 16 and 30. 83.5% of patients were not vaccinated against the disease even though most of them were classified as permanent risk of it. Possession of animals transmitters of the disease and the presence of rodents in the environment were the most important epidemiological factors. 57.5% of patients were scored poorly on the level of knowledge about the disease. Most of them don´t know that vaccination is a preventive measure.
