Effectiveness of the application of sonophoresis and iontophoresis in the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome type I in the hands

Introduction: In 1900 Paul Sudeck described the disease as a disturbed healing inflammation and gave his name to it. In 1994 the International Association for the Study of Pain defined it as complex regional pain syndrome type I or Sudeck's disease and determined the diagnostic criteria and the pillars of its treatment.Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of sonophoresis and iontophoresis in the treatment of patients with type I complex regional pain syndrome.
Methods: a quasi-experimental study was conducted in 38 patients with a diagnosis of complex regional pain syndrome type I in the hands attended at the Physiatry Clinic of the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Hospital from April 2018 to December 2019; the guiding empirical methods were documentary analysis and experimentation. Two groups were formed by non-probabilistic sampling by criteria.
Results: the results obtained reveal that the highest number of patients with complex regional pain syndrome type I were found between 50 and 69 years old respectively, with a predominance of female sex. Fractures were the most frequent triggering factor and the most frequent clinical manifestation was edema. Group B, which was applied sonophoresis, presented better results in pain relief and improvement of joint amplitude and hand functionality.
Conclusions: both methods are effective, but sonophoresis showed superiority.
