Abstract

Introduction: cardioembolic stroke is caused by the occlusion of a cerebral artery by embolic material coming from the heart with a maximum neurological deficit in the first hours of the disease.
Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics and forms of treatment of patients admitted with cardioembolic stroke at the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Hospital.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was conducted at the “Arnaldo Milián Castro” Hospital from January to December 2019. The study population consisted of all patients diagnosed with cardioembolic stroke treated during the study period and who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: the most frequent personal pathological history was arterial hypertension (81.82%), bronchopneumonia (36%) predominated as the most frequent complication, while only 29% had no complications. The greatest number of patients with cerebral infarction presented rapid ventricular rates, followed by adequate ventricular response.
Conclusions: this disease occurred mostly in patients between 70 and 79 years old of male sex, arterial hypertension was the most frequent personal pathological history, deficiencies in the treatment of oral anticoagulation were evidenced, and bronchopneumonia was the most frequent complication.
