Introduction: anemia is the most common hematological disorder globally. Its prevalence in pregnant women affects about 50%. The most common cause is caused by nutritional iron deficiency. Its result is an increase in maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality and its treatment should be taken as a priority. Objective: to identify the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in pregnancy worldwide.
Methods: a systematic review was carried out and the PRISMA guidelines of the empirical studies found in PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar were followed. It was aimed at publications made from 2019 to the present and search terms on the topic in the English language were combined: anemia and pregancy and prevalence, iron anemia deficiency and pregnancy and prevalence, prevalence and anemia, iron deficiency and prevalence. A total of 6,231 articles were obtained.
Development: the problem of anemia in pregnant women has a large dimension in several countries around the world and is a frequent situation during this state of women, mainly due to iron deficiency.
Conclusions: the high prevalence of anemia in this group and iron deficiency was identified as one of the main causes of this nutritional disorder. The country that stood out in this problem was Ecuador.
