Aneurysmal bone cyst
Keywords:
bone cyst; , aneurysmal bone cyst, osteolytic lesion, recurrence, pathologic fractureAbstract
Introduction: Osteolytic bone lesions have different histological origins; among them the aneurysmal bone cyst is one of the most found in daily medical practice.
Objective: Update knowledge on the most important aspects of aneurysmal bone cyst.
Methods: The search and analysis of the information was carried out over a period of 59 days (January 1, 2025 to February 28, 2025) and the following words were used: aneurysmal bone cyst, bone cyst, osteolitic injury. Based on the information obtained, a bibliographic review of a total of 135 articles published in the databases PubMed, Hinari, SciELO, ResearchGate, Ebsco, Scopus, Medscape and Medline were carried out using the search manager and reference manager EndNote, of which 30 citations were used.
Development: The theories involved in patients suffering from this entity are mentioned, as well as the main clinical manifestations and imaging aspects. Reference is made to the classification described by Capanna and its interpretation. The main differences with the solitary bone cyst, the macro and microscopic characteristics, are described. Reference is made to the treatment modalities and complications related to this bone condition.
Conclusions: The aneurysmal bone cyst is an osteolytic type lesion that is most frequently observed in the first two decades of life. The clinical manifestations of patients with this entity vary from asymptomatic to symptomatic that can even lead to pathological fracture. The treatment is generally surgical where various techniques are applied.
