Clinical-epidemiological characterization of pediatric patients with COVID-19

Introduction: COVID-19 has a wide spectrum of presentation in both adults and children.
Objective: To characterize the clinical and epidemiological profile of pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the Policlínico Sur de Placetas.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The study population consisted of the 77 pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 at the Policlínico Sur de Placetas in 2022. Information was obtained from the COVID-19 data file of the Municipal Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, medical records, and epidemiological surveys. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used in the analysis.
Results: Females were the most frequent sex (66, 23%), children were under one year old (34, 44.16%), and the source of infection was unknown (77, 92%). There were 37 children with risk factors (48.05%), of whom 23.38% were under six months old. The majority (97.4%) were symptomatic, with some presenting with fever (80.52%), rhinorrhea (68.83%), and cough (40.26%). Mild illness prevailed (97.4%), and the outcome was favorable in 100% of cases. Obesity showed a significant association with the presence of symptoms.
Conclusions: Females were the most frequent sex. There was no marked predominance of any age group, although age under six months was a prominent risk factor. Unknown source of infection and symptomatic cases were the most frequent. Fever, rhinorrhea, and cough predominated among the clinical manifestations. Most cases experienced mild illness and a favorable outcome.
