Teaching local history through educational resources in the Medicine career

Abstract

Introduction: The potential offered by the study of historical events and their key figures, both national and local, allows for the use of different approaches and methods to foster developmental learning in students.
Objective: To present some educational resources for teaching local history in the Medical Degree program.
Methods: A historical documentary research study was conducted at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Sagua la Grande, specifically within the discipline of Cuban History, taught in the Medical Degree program, during the years 2024 and 2025. Theoretical and empirical methods were employed, including document analysis and interviews with faculty members.
Results: The document analysis revealed the need to develop educational resources for the subject, and the faculty interviews indicated the need for the designed resources to address topics related to the development of Medicine in the local area, as well as the various medical figures and institutions.
Conclusions: The educational materials developed contribute to a higher quality of History instruction in Medical Sciences because they contain a wealth of resources for studying the history of Public Health in Cuba, as well as local history, enabling students to identify with historical figures, institutions, and processes, viewing it not as something past, but as a living experience. The seven experts' evaluation of the educational resources showed a predominantly "very adequate" rating in all aspects.
