Introduction: Nursing professionals in Critical Care Units must integrate the application of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in patient care, centered on ethical principles, to resolve high-risk situations. Objective: To determine the professional skills of Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing Residents from the perspective of Patricia Benner.
Methods: A qualitative/quantitative study was conducted in the Intensive Care Unit of the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Provincial Hospital in Villa Clara between 2023 and 2024. The population consisted of the five residents specializing in nursing who were completing their training at the aforementioned institution. Data collection was carried out using theoretical and empirical methods, such as document analysis, a questionnaire for residents, and group interviews with key informants. Results: The professional skills of the Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing Residents were adequate for their year of residency in 79.4% of cases, while 20.5% did not allow them to effectively perform their duties. Professional skills were categorized according to Patricia Benner's five levels: the advanced beginner level includes first-year residents, the efficient competent level includes second-year residents, and third-year residents are included in the efficient-expert level and are expected to further develop and demonstrate their acquisition of these skills. Experts assessed the professional skills by year as adequate. Conclusions: The professional skills for each year in the Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing Specialty were integrated into Benner's levels, from advanced beginner to expert.
