Work-based education for ophthalmology residents: A focus on outpatient practice

Introduction: The training of Ophthalmology Residents is a process that requires the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a real clinical setting. On-the-job training, especially in outpatient clinics, constitutes a privileged space for the development of clinical, communicative, and ethical competencies.
Objective: To analyze the role of outpatient clinics in the on-the-job training of Ophthalmology Residents.
Method: A descriptive review based on training experience and current literature on on-the-job training and outpatient clinics in Ophthalmology.
Results: Outpatient clinics allow for taking medical histories, making diagnoses, performing basic procedures, and strengthening communication skills under direct supervision. Their impact on comprehensive training and the development of clinical and ethical competencies is noteworthy.
Conclusions: When properly structured and effectively supervised, outpatient clinics are key to training competent Ophthalmology Specialists committed to providing quality care.
