Staphylococcus aureus isolated from skin and soft tissue samples
Keywords:

Introduction: Skin and soft tissue infections have a high prevalence worldwide, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most frequently isolated microorganism. This bacterium exhibits particular virulence characteristics and antimicrobial resistance, which complicates its therapeutic management.
Objective: To characterize Staphylococcus aureus isolates from skin and soft tissue samples.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on a population of 557 Staphylococcus aureus isolates from skin and soft tissue samples obtained from hospitalized patients. These samples were processed in the microbiology laboratory of the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" University Clinical Surgical Hospital in Villa Clara, between January 2023 and December 2024. The study variables were sample origin, source of infection, and methicillin susceptibility. Theoretical, empirical, and statistical methods were used.
Results: Staphylococcus aureus isolates predominated in skin and soft tissue samples from surgical services (72.5%). In all types of hospital services, patients with community-acquired infections were more frequent (77.9%). Staphylococcus aureus isolates were characterized by a high prevalence of methicillin resistance (56.5%). Conclusions: Staphylococcus aureus isolates in skin and soft tissue samples were more frequent in surgical services, most of which were community-acquired. They are characterized by a high prevalence of methicillin resistance, which highlights the challenges of managing these infections and allows for better guidance of antimicrobial therapy.
