Abstract

The sick sinus node syndrome is the causing factor of aproximately half of permanent pacemaker implants in the United States and Europe, and the first cause of its use in people under 40 years of age; however, since the end of the 60s when the term sick sinus syndrome became popular, there have been doubts concerning the way to approach the patient in order to get to a diagnosis. Later, with the beginning of the therapeutics based on permanent electric stimulation there have also been disagreements concerning what are its applications, what kind of pacemakers is the ideal, which mode of stimulation is the ideal and which are the long term results with this kind of treatment. The present work aims at clarifying some of these doubts by means of an updated review of the evidence that exists all over the world in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of t he sick sinus node syndrome, and with this achieving a better understanding about this complex and very frecuent condition.
