Abstract

The investigation, in the form of a cross-sectional descriptive quantitative study, case-controlled, was carried out from June to December 2007 with a universe formed by 11th grade students between 16 and 17 years of age from two pre-university schools (IPUEC-2 and IPVCE) in the Ernesto Che Guevara School Center in Santa Clara . An intentional non-probabilistic sample was used. It included 46 students, within the studied age, from the two pre-university schools. Two groups were made; the study group formed by 22 students with a recently confirmed diagnosis of essential arterial hypertension and the control group with 24 supposedly healthy students who had been identified as normotense ones. The psychological variables (anxiety, anger and depression) and the clinical variables (systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure) were studied. An assessment of the emotional behaviour by means of psychological tests was made, as well as an integral assessment. The elements characterizing the hypertensive adolescents were the tendency to a low expression of their emotions and experiences.
