Abstract

The case of a patient who suffered from emphysematous pyelonephritis and was treated by the Urology, Intensive Medicine and Surgery Services of the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Santa Clara last year (2008) is presented. It was the typical case of a 57-year-old diabetic woman. The evolution of the patient, and some tomographic cuts that were performed, are shown here. The patient died the tenth day of hospitalization in spite of the treatment with wide-spectrum antibiotics and several surgical interventions. We looked for information on this rare illness, its etiopathogeny, its diagnosis and treatment according to the current knowledge on this topic.
