Abstract

A descriptive retrospective study with 100 patients operated on for squamous cell carcinoma of the lip at the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara, was carried out from 1998 to 2007. It was aimed at describing the behavior of this disease in the patients operated during this period. The information was obtained by the survey method, through the review of the biopsy request slip , the corresponding pathology report, the clinical records and the paraffin block of tumor specimen. The study showed that 79.0% of patients were men, 48.0% were between 50 and 69 years of age, 72% reported repeated exposure to sunlight and 66.0% smoked; 84.0% of them had the tumor on the lower lip, 87.0 % presented a tumor of up to 2 cm and 92.0% had no evidence of regional metastases. It also showed that 71.0% of patients had a well differentiated tumor with a tumor depth of 2 to 5mm in 68.0% of cases, and 79.0% of patients had peritumoral inflammation. It was concluded that there is a predominance of male patients with tumors located in the lower lip; which are smaller than or equal to 2cm, without palpable cervical lymph nodes, and with the presence of well-differentiated tumors and peritumoral inflammation.
