Abstract

The adenoma-carcinoma sequence is currently fully accepted. The adenoma or adenomatous polyp is a premalignant lesion that precedes, in most cases, colorectal cancer development. Superficial neoplastic lesions are not very noticeable endoscopically; however, the importance is vital because the risk of invasion they pose is high. New endoscopic diagnostic techniques are currently being developed, resulting in better diagnosis and successful treatments in order to avoid complications linked to both, the common evolution of polypoid lesions of the colon and the actions carried out by the endoscopist. Having as a motivation the importance of these premalignant lesions in colorectal cancer development, a literature review was carried out with the use of specialized books on this subject, printed and electronic journals, as well as information from multiple Web sites.
