Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive relational study was conducted. The universe was formed by 3rd year medical students from the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital during the 2009-2010 academic year, which coincided with the sample. It was intended to characterize some indicators of emotional intelligence of these students from a gender perspective and geographical origin. Characteristics that could hinder the development of emotional intelligence skills such as high levels of rigidity, extremism and suspicion were identified. Other characteristics that facilitate the development were found, such as high levels of positive thinking, responsibility, high frustration tolerance and high capacity to overcome themselves. The results of different tests were compared using Chi square contrast statistics and Kolmogorov-Smirnov to determine differences in some indicators of emotional intelligence in relation to sex and nationality.
