Abstract

A retrospective, longitudinal study of 140 elderly patients who suffered osteoporotic fractures resulting from simple falls from their feet, and who died from diverse complications caused by such fractures, was carried out in the period from January 2000 to December 2010 at the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara. Most affected patients were female white-skinned patients in the age group of 80 to 89 years. Hip fractures predominated, usually from falls in the bathroom and the street. The risk factors observed were genetic, the lifestyle and the use of certain medications such as steroids, diuretics, anti-inflammatory and hypotensive medications. The rheumatic diseases, hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most common conditions in the clinical history. Bronchopneumonia proved to be the most common fatal complication, with a survival time of 11 to 20 days.
