Abstract

A lot of patients come to the office with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection; when the studies are completed a considerable part are diagnosed primary vesicoureteral reflux, which led to the development of this work that aims to describe the general characteristics of presentation and evolution of this disease in patients under 19 years of age treated at the urology department at José Luis Miranda Children's University Hospital in Santa Clara between 2002 and 2007. A cross sectional study was conducted. It included 94 patients younger than 19 years, with a total of 120 units of pyelo-uretero-caudal system with vesicoureteral reflux, who underwent medical treatment with antibiotic prophylaxis. Primary vesicoureteral reflux appeared, primarily, unilaterally in grade III with a high prevalence in female children less than one year of age compared to male, although there is no statistically significant association between age group and sex. The reason for starting the diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux was essentially the urinary tract infection. The most common isolated germ was Escherichia coli. With medical treatment, in a relatively short period of study, it is shown a significant resolution of primary vesicoureteral reflux grades I, II and III to achieve a healthy kidney in the adult.
