Abstract

A prospective, longitudinal, intervention study was conducted with the aim of improving the quality of life of the patients who suffer from anal pain at the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Villa Clara. The universe is made up of 195 patients treated at the Consultation of Coloproctology between January and April 2011. The study shows the cases with coccygodynia that led to surgery. The most common cause of anal pain in patients over 60 years turned out to be hemorrhoids (36.4%), followed by the rectocele (16.9%) and rectal tumor (9.7%). The most affected age group was between 60 and 70 years (69.2%). Females predominated (62.6%). Hemorrhoids predominated in both sexes as a cause of anal pain. Rectocele only in females and rectal tumor was predominant in females (68.4%) and anal fistula in men (90%). In March there was increased attendance at the Consultation of Coloproctology because of anal pain and the different causes studied. Surgical treatment of patients with coccygodynia was excellent (90.9%).
