Abstract

The marked increase in morbidity and mortality from trauma in the Americas region places it as the leading cause of death among people under 45 years of age, surpassed only by cancer and atherosclerosis. In Cuba, it has been estimated that one death occurs every four hours due to polytrauma. The social cost and human suffering are incalculable; both are the root cause of potential years of life lost. A prospective study was conducted on the diagnostic and therapeutic management of all patients who were admitted to the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Villa Clara from March 2009 to March 2010 with a diagnosis of thoracic trauma, abdominal or thoraco-abdominal trauma during its evolution from the emergency department until discharge (alive or dead), based on indicators of quality. The data were obtained from a micro history created for this purpose which included the variables of interest that will allow a follow-up from admission to discharge. Quality indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment depending on the time will be constructed.
