A prospective quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted at the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Santa Clara during the period from September 2008 to December 2010. The sample consisted of 68 patients of both sexes who attended the Consultation of Maxillofacial Surgery of the hospital with pain in the temporomandibular joint region. It was divided into two groups: group 1 (control) with a total of 36 patients who were treated with anti-inflammatory analgesic drugs and muscle relaxants, and group 2 (study) consisting of 32 patients who received 10 treatment sessions electromagnotherapy. A form that contains Helkimo test and the visual analogue scale were applied to the sample. There was a predominance of males in the study, and the most affected age group was 35 to 45 years. The signs and symptoms that most commonly occurred were joint and muscle pain. Only five sessions were needed for full or partial relief of pain in patients who were administered electromagnotherapy, and it was determined that the treatment of temporomandibular disorders with the electromagnoterapia is effective in the total remission of pain compared with the use of drug therapy.Downloads
