Epidemiology of infections associated with healthcare

Introduction: Infections associated with health care constitute a public health problem due to the increase in morbidity and mortality they produce in hospitalized patients and the increase in hospitalization costs. Objective: to describe the epidemiological behavior of associated infections with health care at the Mártires del 9 de Abril Hospital, in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara, between 2014 and 2017. Methods: descriptive, cross-sectional study. Universe: total of infections associated with healthcare reported in the study period. Studied variables: age, sex, type, isolated microorganisms, recorded services and the Microbiology use for their study. Results: The four-year incidence rate was 0.6 c/100 egress, 44.4% of reported infections corresponded to the respiratory apparatus and 53.2% occurred in the group of 60 and over ages. The 43% of the microorganisms isolated were Staphylococcus aureus. In 52.2% of the infections microbiological studies were carried out and in 75.3% of the cases a positive result was obtained. The highest rates corresponded to: Therapy Services, 4.5%; Nephrology, 2.5% and Geriatrics, 1.8%. Conclusions: male sex, the age group 60 years and over and the respiratory system infections was predominant. Staphylococcus aureus was the most isolated germ. Male patients, from 60 years of age who suffered a respiratory system infection, had the highest risk of dying.Downloads
