Introduction: Mental illness inevitably produces an impact on the quality of life of the patient, the family and the social environment. In the rehabilitation and reinsertion of the psychiatric patient to the community, advanced nursing plays a decisive role in the use of determining strategies to carry it out effectively. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge about the rehabilitation in patients, family members and nurses before and after the use of a modifying strategy. Methods: An intervention study was conducted in patients attending, accompanied by family members and nurses, the protected workshop of the Dr. Luis San Juan Pérez Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in the first quarter of 2017. The study included 20 patients with more than 5 years of suffering from the disease, 20 family members and 52 nurses, the physical staff at the time of the study. The modification applied was a manual designed as part of this investigation. Results: before applying the manual, the level of knowledge of patients and relatives was unsatisfactory, while that of the nursing staff was moderately satisfactory; after applying the modification, the level of knowledge was satisfactory in the three samples studied. The topics detected as deficient in the three groups analyzed coincide with the modalities of occupational therapy and psychiatric rehabilitation. Conclusions: An educational manual was applied to patients, relatives and nursing staff and it positively modified the level of knowledge about the rehabilitation and reinsertion of the psychiatric patient into the community.Downloads
