Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a major health problem worldwide. Objective: to characterize the progression of this disease in the Princess Marina Hospital of Gaborone, Botswana. Methods: between April 2014 and February 2016, an observational, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out that included 61 adult patients of both sexes in stages 2 to 4 of chronic kidney disease. The age, sex and etiology of the originary nephropathy, comorbidity and laboratory determinations were related. Results: male sex prevailed (37, 60.6%) and the mean age was 61.7 years. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was the most common comorbidity. Thirteen patients (21.31%) showed progression of the disease, while the laboratory determinations and the estimated glomerular filtration rate, in those who did not progress, showed a tendency to improvement, with the exception of cholesterol, which increased discreetly: 4, 78 and 4.94mmol/l (t=1,364, pα=0.371). Conclusions: this study shows that with the adequate follow-up of patients with stage 2 to 4 chronic kidney disease, it is possible to influence their rate of progression.
