Astigmatism in surgery of cataract by phacoemulsification
Keywords:

Introduction: surgical intervention is the only effective treatment for cataract and phacoemulsification is the most widespread technique for its performance, but even with the development of surgical techniques it may induce astigmatism. Objective: to compare astigmatism values in cataract operated eyes, as well as to evaluate the results of surgical treatment at three months of follow-up in both groups.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in 40 eyes operated on for cataracts by phacoemulsification attended in an Ophthalmology Consultation of the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Hospital of Villa Clara Province during 2018.
Results: female sex (70.0%), mean age of 73.3 years and white skin color (92.5%) predominated. In all, visual acuity three months after surgery showed favorable changes and refractive astigmatism improved in both in 60.6% with -1.28 diopters and for keratometric astigmatism in the group improved 57.9% (-0.99). Induced astigmatism was found in 58.8%. Very satisfactory results were obtained in 47.4% of the operated eyes.
Conclusions: The surgical treatment at three months was evaluated as very satisfactory or mostly satisfactory, even with induced astigmatism of 0.69 diopters in more than half of the operated eyes.
