Complications of radiation treatment in the sexual area in prostate cancer

A descriptive retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of radiotherapy, emphasizing in the complications in the sexual area in patients with prostate cancer who were diagnosed in the municipality of Placetas and referred to the Service of Oncologic Urology of the Dr. Celestino Hernández Robau University Hospital from January 2003 to December 2010. The totality of the universe of 93 patients was selected, after informed consent. A survey was conducted, which included socio-demographic variables, as well as a sexuality questionnaire. The medical records were reviewed to assess the treatment. The main results showed there was a prevalence of the age group over 70 years, the white race, the histological type, and adenocarcinoma. The cancer history in the family prevailed and the specific prostatic antigen was an important diagnostic method. There was a prevalence of acute radiodermatitis and late radiation cystitis as major complications. The disorders in the sexual sphere were found in a small percentage of patients, being impotence the most frequent one. The effectiveness of treatment was confirmed, with low incidence of complications the sexual area.Downloads
