Intermittent dietary restriction. Alternative treatment in type 2 diabetic patients
Abstract
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial disease. Maintaining its control is essential. Intermittent dietary restriction can be an alternative, with beneficial results.
Objective: To describe the effect of intermittent dietary restriction in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Method: A quasi-experimental before-and-after study was conducted in Clinic 17-19 of the "Chiqui Gómez" Polyclinic between 2019 and 2022. The study population (96) consisted of all registered adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thirty-two participants were selected by non-probability sampling based on criteria. Their basal metabolic rate was calculated, they were instructed to use intermittent dietary restriction, and its effect was observed.
Results: 53.3% of the sample were women and patients aged 50 years and older; 43.8% reported high blood pressure as a personal medical history, and 68.8% reported a diagnosis of hypertension more than five years earlier. Forty-three percent (43.7%) were using insulin. The unacceptable nutritional status before dietary restriction was 62.5% and 40.62% afterward, and blood glucose levels, which was high in 87.5%, decreased to 56.3% after a few months. After the alternative, the percentage of those using prescription medications increased from 71.9% to 93.8%, and 84.4% were treated with two or fewer medications.
Conclusions: The effect of intermittent dietary restriction established with the personalized dietary regimen based on basal metabolic rate as a therapeutic alternative showed changes in nutritional status, blood glucose levels, and medication use.
