Tuberculosis and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome
Keywords:
tuberculosis; síndrome inflamatorio de reconstitución inmuneAbstract
Introduction: Tuberculosis is a very common disease in the African population. Early detection and appropriate treatment result in a cure for most patients. The difficulty in diagnosis, treatment abandonment, and the emergence of resistance to traditional drugs currently make it a major public health problem worldwide. In Angola, the incidence rate is 333/100,000 inhabitants; complications are often associated with a rapid course and even death.
Objective: To report on the condition of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome in a patient with tuberculosis.
Patient information: This paper presents a patient with tuberculosis who experienced multiple complications associated with the disease and its treatment, including immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, also known as paradoxical reaction to antituberculosis treatment, which constitutes an adverse clinical consequence of the restoration of immunity in patients suffering from a serious systemic infection such as miliary tuberculosis.
Conclusions: There are no registered or published case reports of this disease in Angola that have developed into immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome.
