Autocirugía en situación de contingencia: a propósito de una apendicectomía poco mencionada

Abstract

Introducción: la autocirugía constituye una modalidad de autoasistencia sanitaria muy poco frecuente. La autoapendicectomía es un tipo de autocirugía extremadamente rara de la que solamente se conocen tres intentos consumados exitosos.  
Objetivo: exponer el caso de una autoapendicectomía poco divulgada, llevada a cabo por el veterinario Robert Kerr “Jock” McLaren en un contexto de guerra y en condiciones extremas.
Método: se efectuó una revisión de la bibliografía sobre el caso de estudio que comprendió literatura impresa y digital.
Desarrollo: se detalla un caso de autoapendicectomía ocurrido el pasado siglo, durante el desarrollo de un conflicto armado; se ofrece breve información bibliográfica sobre el protagonista de este raro suceso y posteriormente se puntualiza el hecho en sí y se compara con otros casos semejantes.
Conclusiones: la autoapendicectomía realizada por McLaren constituye una hazaña extraordinaria y en extremo riesgosa que estuvo motivada por la necesidad de supervivencia ante severas condiciones de guerra y la inaccesibilidad a un servicio de salud.
