Abstract

Systemic rheumatic diseases are often associated with accelerated atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In order to identify factors that are associated with vascular risk in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, an analytical, longitudinal, retrospective case-control study was conducted in patients with this diagnosis who attended the consultation of Collagen Diseases at the Arnaldo Milian Castro University Hospital in Santa Clara, from September 2011 to February 2012. The variables associated with the presence of vascular risk in patients were: dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, obesity and smoking. The 24-hour proteinuria and creatinine were the most helpful tests in determining vascular risk. The use of 7.5mg daily prednisone or more, lupus activity and lupus nephritis, as independent factors, were significantly associated with vascular risk.
