Objective: to characterize risk factors in women diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer from January 2005 to December 2010 in the municipality of Placetas.Material and Method: from a universe of 46 patients diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer the totality was selected. After the informed consent, a survey was conducted. It included socio-demographic data, personal and family disease history and previous obstetric history; the medical records were also reviewed.
Results: there was a prevalence of patients in the age group from 31-40 years, from urban areas and with a secondary level of schooling. Regarding harmful habits, daily cigarette consumption prevailed. It was observed a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, and the most common infections were the human papillomavirus and trichomonas. Patients with two or four sexual partners and with the first sexual intercourse at the age 18 predominated. Most had two or fewer full-term pregnancies. The most widely used contraceptive method was the intrauterine device. There was a prevalence of patients with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma and the presence of more than one symptom at clinical onset.
Conclusions: The study of the risk factors showed that smoking, the number of sexual partners, the early onset of sexual activity and the presence of sexually transmitted infections are a subpopulation with increased risk of cervical cancer.
