Abstract

A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out from January to June 2007. The universe of study was formed by students between the ages of 14 and 17 from three pre-university schools in the Ernesto Che Guevara School Center in Santa Clara City . The sample was formed by a total of 1551 students who underwent an active search of arterial hypertension by means of successive blood pressure measurements during their control at the school polyclinic. The prevalence of arterial hypertension was 5.8 percent (in both sexes) with a clear prevalence in the case of males (4.1%). The previous diagnosis in this teenager population was 0.8 percent. When comparing these results with other studies some differences were obtained, and some figures higher than the percentile 95 and 99 were found in the teenager population included in this study.
