Introduction: The adequate preparation in Pediatrics of those students who begin the 6th year of Medicine is a concern of ours. They are the future comprehensive basic general practitioners. Objective: To determine the strength and difficulties in the teaching of the Pediatrics program. Methods: A descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted at the José Luis Miranda Provincial Pediatric University Hospital in Santa Clara with the students of the 6th year of Medicine who were carrying out their 10-week rotation in Pediatrics. For this, a documentary analysis of the program of the subject was made, and semistructured interviews to students and teachers were conducted, as well as visits to classes. A proficiency test was devised, and an observation guide designed to assess knowledge and skills in students was created. A triangulation of the information was conducted taking the teachers of Pediatrics as focus group and the associate and full professors of the subject in our hospital as nominal group. This allowed us to evaluate the curriculum of the subject Pediatrics, its relevance and impact on the comprehensive basic general practitioner. Results: medical students arrive in the 6th year of Medicine with insufficient knowledge of Pediatrics; most of them are not prepared for the pediatric emergency care. Conclusions: The improvement of the program is a necessity for achieving quality in the training of new professionals. Besides, the adequate pedagogical preparation of our teacher staff is also an essential requirement.Downloads
