Abstract

Pterygium is an objective problem in ophthalmology, despite the enormous scientific and technical development achieved in recent years and the many surgical techniques performed. The recurrence rate is between 20 and 40% compared to conventional techniques. The conjunctival autograft is a procedure used successfully in recent years. It is based on a thorough cleaning of the area of the pterygium and the transplantation of the normal conjunctiva to the raw area where this was dissected. After the study of this technique, it was determined that it is simple and that their rate of recurrence is low. An observational-descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study was  conducted. The universe consisted of all patients (eyes) diagnosed with primary pterygium who were surgically treated with this surgical technique in the Eye Center of the State of Lara, Venezuela, in the period from June 2006 to June 2010. A sample was selected using a simple random sampling of 150 patients. Most of them were between 30 and 50 years of age, there was a predominance of males and generally were agricultural workers. The most frequent complication was the granuloma and only 4.6% of patients relapsed with this surgical technique.
