Abstract

A case of a 54-year-old patient with a history of episodes of marked asthenia, weight loss and pain in the left rib cage that was exacerbated when walking is reported. The patient began with epigastric pain and underwent an endoscopy that showed an ulcer on the greater curvature of the stomach and chronic gastritis. Days later, the appearance of dark stool indicated the existence of an upper gastrointestinal bleeding. He was admitted to hospital but died of cardiopulmonary arrest. The histopathology report indicated a splenic hemangioma with gastric rupture. Hemangiomas are the most common primary tumors of the spleen, however, most of splenic hemangiomas are discovered incidentally and its clinical significance is often due to the possibility of complications and the need to differentiate them from other diseases.
