Abstract

A quasi-experimental, community intervention study was conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of auriculotherapy in mild and moderate hypertensive patients at the Rehabilitation Ward of the Union Iribarren Comprehensive Health Area, State of Lara, from July 2009 to January 2010. The population consisted of 120 hypertensive patients between 30 and 60 years of age, of which 70 were chosen through unintentional probability sampling. They were divided into two groups of 35 subjects each, one with conventional medication and auriculopuncture technique, and the other with drug treatment only. The statistical processing showed that males were more likely to suffer from hypertension (62.8%), professionals predominated as hypertensive patients (51.4%) compared with other occupational groups, and patients with combined treatment with auriculotherapy showed better disease control (77.2%); it is recommended to generalize the study of this technique.
