Origins and historical development of cardiovascular surgery in Cuba during the 20th century

Abstract

Introduction: cardiovascular surgery, since its inception, has had a prominent place in scientific research and in technology applied to health. Objective: to explain the historical development of cardiovascular surgery in Cuba during the 20th century. Method: a documentary analysis of scientific journals, Infomed websites and books linked to the history of cardiovascular surgery in Cuba was carried out. Development: the different historical-scientific facts that allowed creating the research base and the surgical advances which supported the necessary development of cardiovascular surgery were collected; also, the main achievements of the specialty in Cuba, and the support for internationalism and teaching were specified. Conclusions: cardiovascular surgery was conceived and incubated at the National Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery and spread throughout the country after the creation of the cardiology hospitals.
