Abstract

Introduction: The application of molecular biology techniques and the success of the Human Genome Project have opened a new era in both medicine and nutrition. Progress in nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics will be linked to the use of personalized diets to delay the onset of disease and optimize the maintenance of human health.
Objectives: To address the development of the Omic Sciences and explain the differences between the concepts of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics and their relationship to the concept of personalized nutrition.
Method: A bibliographic review of texts compiled in the Medline, Lilacs, and Cochrane databases was conducted.
Development: Nutritional sciences have highlighted the relationship between diet, nutrition, and health. When reviewing the scientific literature that covers the interactions between genes and nutrients and between diet, its components, and the genome, it is striking that the terms that appear in many publications and their definitions sometimes lead to a certain degree of confusion.
Conclusions: After reviewing current knowledge of nutritional genomics, we see that the first steps have been taken in this new, exciting, and promising field of personalized nutrition. In any case, and not in the near future, the integration of genomics into nutritional sciences will increase the effectiveness of nutritional interventions, both at the clinical and population levels.
