Introduction: Anterior knee pain syndrome is one of the most frequently that affects the osteomyoarticular system, within this is the lateral compression of patella. Objective: Update knowledge on the most important aspects of lateral compression of patella.
Methods: Search and analysis of the information was carried out in a period of 91 days (October 1st to December 30th 2024) and the following words were used: lateral knee compression syndrome, lateral retinacular release, patellofemoral malalignment, patellofemoral pain. From the obtained information a bibliographic review of a total of 125 articles was published in the databases PubMed, Hinari, SciELO, ResearchGate, Ebsco, Scopus, Medscape and Medline were carried out using the search manager and reference manager EndNote, from these 30 quotes were selected 28 from the last five years to carry out the review.
Development: There are allude the more general aspects of the anatomy of the lateral compartment as well as the main differences between lateral compression and patellofemoral instability. Reference is made of the clinical and imaging diagnosis, these latter with the most important measurements of the axial view. Conservative and surgical treatment modalities are described, both open and arthroscopic. Conclusions: Lateral compression of patella is a disorder accompanied by pain located in the outer part of the knee. Conservative treatment is the first line and if it fails, surgical intervention is justified.
